Crown History - 1930's to 1950
Crown Equipment Corporation was born in the rural American community of New Bremen, Ohio, USA. The business has developed from a one-room operation into a globally renowned company, currently considered to be the seventh biggest lift truck maker on the planet.
The Crown company was founded in 1945 by two brothers, Allen A. Dicke and the late Carl H. Dicke. Carl’s son and Chairman Emeritus, James F. Dicke, joined the family company later on that same year. At present, his son, James F. Dicke II, is Chairman and CEO. James F. Dicke III, serves as the company President today, becoming the fourth generation of the Dicke descendants to maintain this position.
Now an globally diversified corporation, Crown initially manufactured temperature controls for coal burning furnaces, servicing a small client base. The assembly of these control units took place in a former hardware store based in New Bremen, Ohio, where Crown’s headquarters presently remain.
In 1949, responding to the public’s rising appeal of the television, Crown shifted into the assembly of antenna rotators. This product was utilized to enhance television reception and image quality. The company’s successful move enabled them to become a leading producer of units until 2001. The company ceased production in October after a decline in the global need for TV antenna rotators.
History – 1950 to 1975
In the early 1950’s Crown diversified into the manufacturing and restoration of electronic and mechanical parts for government and private industry. After numerous successful bids within a short period of time, the company had built a reputable business in this field.
Flexibility and achievement dominated Crown’s ability to diversify once again. In 1957, production into the material handling market began with lift truck manufacturing. The company believed the industry required a smaller line of superior quality forklifts. Crown immediately fashioned an exceptional series of contemporary equipment and swiftly became the most rapidly evolving material handling organization with its range of merchandise.
By 1966, Crown had ventured into the international material handling marketplaces by opening up shop in Sydney, Australia. Sydney is at this time a regional headquarters for Crown for all Pacific Asian sales, advertising and marketing, and services. Crown remains an unwavering industry leader these days, supported by exceptional operations, solid sales and strong manufacturing operations.
Two years later, Crown had moved into the European markets by buying up an Irish production facility from a German Company, Steinbock. There they began to assemble PTH hand pallet trucks. Later on that same year, Crown started their first London operation stationed nearby Heathrow Airport. The sales and service operation of Crown’s complete lift truck line was available in the UK by the end of the decade. In the early 1970’s, Crown expanded and began advertising and marketing lift trucks across Europe through independent sellers.
Crown History - 1975 to Current Day
Nowadays, Crown manufactures an enormous fleet of electric lift trucks. The company’s vendor network, located in key global markets, consists of both Crown-owned and independently-owned sellers. They are responsible for handling the company’s product sales and service.
Corporate offices in New Bremen, Ohio and Munich, Germany offer national marketing and promotional sales support to all seller and sales personnel.
